Media management in Drupal 8

Media management is available for Drupal 8. MD Systems has completed its Media Initiative Program together with Janez Urevc to remove the blockers in many projects. The result is an updated media ecosystem that is ready to use! It fulfills the most relevant needs of Drupal users and sitebuilders. We now have a great base for additional features.
Multiple media management modules in Drupal 7
In Drupal 7, the Media project tried to solve all media problems in one single module. As a result it was in permanent transition and never completed. There were countless additional and alternative modules for media management. Some of them were better and more powerful than others but the situation was not satisfying. Unfortunately, most Drupal site builders and agencies tended to create highly custom solutions instead of working with the maintainers to improve the media ecosystem.
Media Initiative: Cleanup media situation
For Drupal 8, a group of developers founded the Media Initiative in 2013. They planned to use multiple components instead of one module to clean up the media situation.
But the estimated workload seemed to be too big and the progress was slow. At the time of the Drupal 8 core release, people were frightened by the limited maturity of media management features and by the unknown date of availability.
MD Systems took the lead and developed a strategy to change that situation for Drupal 8. We mobilized companies (Somedia, Gassmann Media, Ringier), agencies (Wondrous, Ueberbit, etc.) and several Drupal developers to support our project. By pushing the Media Initiative with our Media Initiative Program shortly after the official release of Drupal 8, we could kickstart the project before the fragmentation of the media ecosystem began.
Ready to use for Drupal 8
Within 4 months we have reached what didn’t happen during the previous 5 years. Now, there is a solid base that is ready to use and contains all relevant features that are widely used. The program helped the Media Initiative to gain global momentum and many people from the community are actively participating in further development.
Based on the Media Initiative you can now:
- Browse through your media files of your website (Entity Browser, Filebrowser)
- Embed files in the WYSIWYG editor by browsing (Entity Embed)
- Add and edit asset metadata (Media entity, File Entity)
- Crop images on the website (Crop, Imagefield Crop)
- Add image effects like watermark, auto orientation, color-shift etc. (Image Effects)
- And use many more features...
You can find more detailed information about that in the blog of Janez .
MD Systems as a major driver
We are sure that numerous Drupal sitebuilders and end users will enjoy the media projects for a long time and we are proud to be a major driver for developing such a project in an early state of the new Drupal version.

In Drupal 8, there are some key items in Media Management missing at the moment. The goal of the Media Initiative is to ship tools that are ready and following best practices of Media Management out of the box.
We started the Media Initiative Program to push some of the most important features of the Media Initiative with Janez Urevc and a dedicated team so that they are ready to use short after the official release of Drupal 8 in November 2015.
«Somedia», the leading media house in southeast Switzerland, publishes several daily and weekly newspapers and magazines.
Gassmann Media AG publishes media from the "Lake of Biel" and "Bernese Jura" areas through the publisher W. Gassmann AG and the newspaper pool "Biel / Freiburg / Valais". In addition they are the reliable and competent partner for the disposition of advertising for Swiss newspapers and online platforms.
Ringier is an internationally active, modern media group with an integrated and diversified value creation chain. The current strategy is based not only on media but also on e-commerce and entertainment.

One of our favourite community events, Drupal Developer Days (DDD), happened last week in Milan. DDD is an event with rich history and strong tradition. It is independently organized by the Drupal community.
DDD is primarily developer focused and community oriented. This makes it a perfect place to work side by side with other developers from the community, meet new people with common interests and start new initiatives and collaborations.

It is no secret that we at MD Systems take community very seriously. We have invested time and money in many Drupal 8 initiatives in the past 3 years. This has helped us adopting Drupal 8 sooner than the majority of the community and also resulted in MD Systems becoming the number one contributor to Drupal.

Right after the Drupal Camp Vienna, a big group of Drupal developers met at the MD Systems offices to sprint for the Media Initiative. The sprint was a huge success: numerous issues have been resolved, the Media Initiative made a big step and the community showed once again how powerful it can be when everybody pulls at the same strings.
